Accelerating the development of under-screen camera technology, how about LG’s under-screen camera technology?

Recently, with the continuous innovation of mobile phone R&D and manufacturing, the under-screen camera function is becoming more and more popular nowadays. It is reported that LG has also begun to develop under-screen camera (UDC) technology research and development.

According to public information, LG is currently not only developing under-screen camera technology, but also developing hole-in technology for in-screen cameras. It’s worth noting that LG is mainly for Apple’s iPhone orders. For the realization of under-screen camera technology, improving light transmittance is one of the most direct solutions. LG’s goal is to have a light transmittance of 20 percent in its front-facing camera by 2023, and more than 40 percent after 2024.

According to the data of Wisdom Buds, as of the latest, LG and its affiliates have a total of 108,942 patent applications for screens and cameras in 126 countries/regions. The proportion of the number of patents granted each year to the number of annual patent applications for that year is 50% or more. Experts from Wisdom Bud Consulting said that the proportion of the number of authorized invention patents in the total number of patent applications reflects the level of innovation. It is said that LG’s level of innovation in this field is at the leading level (see Figure 1 for details). In addition, from the perspective of patent categories, 97.38% of the patents are invention patents, 1.28% of the patents are utility model patents, a total of 1,392 patents; 1.34% of the patents are design patents, a total of 1,460 patents ( See Figure 2 for details).
